10 Important Steps For The Beginner Minimalist

Seeing how simple life is as a minimalist might make people excited about becoming one too and experiences the benefits that come with adopting a minimalist lifestyle, only, many don’t know where to start. The shift doesn’t have to be radical, slow changes can go a longer way than a sudden one. Below is a list of tiny steps to help you become a minimalist:

1. Do some research

By reading this, you’re on your way to become a minimalist. Do more research about specific areas you feel like you need to work on. Read books about minimalism, read blogs about minimalism and watch minimalist YouTubers share their inspirational stories.

2. Motivation

Start with writing down all the reasons why minimalism is a great idea. The benefits of minimalism are many:

• Getting rid of debt and saving money
• Throwing less waste (if not going zero-waste) and saving the planet
• Saving more time otherwise spent dusting and sorting through your stuff
• Less stress
• ….

Keeping a list of the benefits minimalism can bring into your life is a great motivation to get you started and keep you going.

3. Set some goals

The best way to achieve anything is to make it a goal. The goal is to become minimalistic but to reach that, you’ll need to divide into smaller weekly and monthly goals. It can be anything from making a budget and sticking to it, to being able to live on a few clothing items.

4. Decluttering

You don’t need more storage space, you need less stuff. You'll be amazed at how little do we need to live on. Sort through your stuff and see what you can donate, what needs to be thrown away and what can be sold. For clothes, the rule goes like this: if you didn’t wear it in a year and a half, you’ll probably won’t wear it ever. For other stuff, make sure you get rid of duplicates.

5. Buy less

Naturally, if you want to be minimal and if you’re going to declutter your house, you wouldn’t want to buy more stuff and have them clutter in your house all over again. So only shop for essentials and in the quantity that you need. And if you can use something else instead or you can borrow the same item and it’s a onetime use, then don’t buy it.

6. Pack lightly

Go with the one bag rule, wherever you’re going, always make sure you’re carrying only one bag whether you’re going out or traveling.

7. Dress simple

Tired of figuring out what to wear? Wear your yesterday outfit as long as it’s still clean. Impressing others is more lasting when it’s a result of your actions and not appearance. Dress with minimum accessories, and always wear what you love and are comfortable in.

8. Eat simple

Plan your meals ahead and double the recipe so you can freeze the rest and reheat it later. This will also save you trips to the grocery store and most importantly you won’t have to spend so much time thinking about what you are going to eat for lunch and make for lunch.

9. Clear your working space

Having a minimalistic home can bring you peace of mind, but having a minimalistic workspace can increase your focus and boost your productivity. A well-organized desk with minimal distractions can lead you to less stress and save you so much time. So get rid of what you don’t need, and only put on your desk what needs to be done is a consequent order, if not sorted by urgency, sort it by the most important task.

10. Start saving

Making monthly or weekly goals about saving a certain amount of money can be a great motivation to spend less to meet those goals. Pay off your debt and start wisely investing your savings.
