29 Priceless Lessons Self-Development Books Taught Me

We all want to be better, no one like the feeling of being left behind, it's true that there's no magical solution, yet some small steps taken day in and day out and some small changes will do just fine to give you the change you're seeking, below I'm sharing some lessons I've learned through reading some self-development books, these lessons, we need to keep reminding ourselves with constantly, because the way to be better lay in applying them everyday:

1- When you want to live at your full potential, you'll discover that the good can often be the enemy of the best.

2- You're best days are not behind you, they're in front of you. You haven't done your best yet.

3- The events of your past do not reduce your potential. How somebody has treated you or what he or she said about you doesn't change your potential.

4- Out of our greatest rejection comes our greatest direction, we all hate to be rejected from something we want, but you cannot make the mistake of just sitting back and settling where you are.

5- The dream in your heart may be bigger than the environment in which you find yourself, for that you should get out of that environment in order to see your dream fulfilled. Like an oak tree, if you plant it in a pot, its growth will be limited. Once its roots fill that pot, it can grow no further. The problem is not with the tree, it is with the environment!

6- If you want to let go of the past, you got first, to discipline your thoughts to stop thinking about that past, quit talking about it. Quit reliving every negative experience.

7- You cannot hang out with negative people and expect to live a positive life because you're probably not going to pull them up, more likely, if you continue to spend too much time in their presence, they will pull you down.

8- Your destiny is not tied to the people who walk away from you. There's something called "the gift of good-bye", that means when somebody who is pulling you down chooses to leave, you may not realize it but he just did you a great favor. Don't look back, instead, keep looking forward.

9- Create a positive environment. If you tend to struggle with discouragement and depression, don't sit around in a dark house all day long thinking about your problems. Open the windows, let the sun shine in and find somebody happy to cheer you up. Get around people who will inspire you to rise higher.

10- You can't give away what you don't have. If you don't love yourself, you're not going to be able to love others.

11- Our words set the direction for our lives. Positively or negatively, creative power resides in your words, because you believe your words more than you believe anybody else's. Your words go out of your mouth and they come right back into your ears. If you can hear those comments long enough, they will drop down into your spirit, and those words will produce exactly what you're saying. That's why it is so important that we get the habit of declaring good things over our lives every day.

12- Change the way you speak about yourself and you can change your life, in other words, don't talk about the way you are, talk about the way you want to be.

13- If you want your life to increase, if you want your life to get better, then you need to help improve somebody else's life. Take time to make a difference, don't just obsess about how you can make you own life better. Think about how you can make somebody else's life better as well.

14- Everybody has the right to have a bad day every once in a while. If somebody does something you don't like, if they insult you or offend you unwittingly, simply swallow your pride and say "I choose to overlook that offense" and move on.

15- It's not so much that we break bad habits, we must replace them. The key to success is to find something with which you can replace the negative habit. If you habitually run to the kitchen and eat every time you are stressed out, find someplace else to go, something else to do.

16- Practice makes perfect, but sometimes we practice the wrong things, people who are good at being negative, constantly practice negative thinking. Repetition is what forms a habit. That's what puts us on autopilot. So we have to make sure we are practicing the right things.

17- Happiness does not depend on your circumstances, it's a choice that you make. That means, no matter what comes our way, we can have smiles on our faces. Even if we are facing difficult or negative circumstances, we need to learn to keep a positive outlook and not to wait for our circumstances to be worked out before we decide to be happy.

18- Each day is full of surprises and inconveniences, so you must accept the fact that not everything is going to always go your way. Don't let stress steak your joy. Instead, be adaptable and adjustable and seek to make the best of a bad situation. You don't have to have your way to be happy.

19- Life is too short to live it stressed out. It's not worth it, think about this. Ten years from now, many of the things that you are allowing to create stress in your life won't even matter.

20- If you are going to become better, you will need to know how to deal with critics, people who are talking about you, judging you or maybe even making false accusations. Never take it personally. Many times, it's not about you, even though it may be directed to you. If the critics weren't tearing you apart, he'd be complaining about somebody else.

21- The way to overcome unwarranted criticism is by not allowing yourself to take revenge or even harboring an attitude that wants revenge. Don't sink down to their level and start talking badly about them. Most of all, don't get defensive or try to prove that you're right and your critic is wrong. The way to defeat criticism is to shake it off and keep moving forward. Stay focused on your goals.

22- Don't spend all your time trying to win over your critics, just run your own race. Recognize that you cannot stop people from talking negatively. If you are trying to be the "gossip police", hoping to make sure that nobody ever says a negative thing about you, you're going to live a frustrated life. Accept the fact that certain people are going to make cutting remarks. But you are better than that, you don't have to drink from their poison. you can rise above it. you can stay on the high road and enjoy your life anyway.

23- Some people spend more time focused on what other people are saying about them than they do thinking about their own dreams and goals. Understand that not everybody is going to be excited about your dreams. In fact, some people are going to be downright jealous. They will find fault and criticize. It is crucial that you learn to shake it off unwarranted criticism. Because the moment you start changing so you can please people, you will be taking a step backward.

24- It is in the difficult times that we grow stronger, that's when we are being stretched. We may not like it, stretching can be sometimes uncomfortable. But if we keep the right attitude, we will come out better than we were before.

25- You can be in the storm, but don't let the storm get in you. The key to passing a test is to remain in peace. When you're in peace, you have power. Peace is not necessarily the absence of trouble. You can have trouble and conflict all around you on the outside, yet you have real peace on the inside.

26- Quit looking at what's wrong in your life, and start being grateful for what's right. If you want to become a better you, it is imperative that you appreciate the good in your life. Everything may not be perfect in your life, but if you don't learn to be happy where you are, you will never get to where you want to be. Too many people have lost their passion for life. They've lost their enthusiasm. At one time they were excited about their dreams. They got up every day with purpose and with passion. But now because of the time that's passed, the disappointments they have experienced, and the pressures of life, they're not excited about them anymore. They've lost their fire.

27- Enthusiasm is contagious. If you go into your workplace with a smile on your face, full of life, full of joy and victory, before long, you'll rub off on.

28- We attract what we continually think about. When negative, discouraging thoughts come, you must turn them around. Get your list out and read over it again remind yourself with all the good you have in your life.

29- An important key to fanning your passion is to keep fresh goals before you, it will keep you fresh and excited about life. You goal needn't be lofty or grandiose. It may be a goal to finish school, or to be a better parent, or to increase your income. Still, have something out in front of you. Always be growing and never allow yourself to become complacent. After you accomplish one goal, immediately set another. Keep moving, keep looking for new challenges.
